This December, we're crushing on Hong Kong based, award winning label BYT.
This Hong Kong start-up is the creation of previous City Slicker, Christina Dean, founder of environmental NGO Redress, and co-founder Michelle Bang. Winner of the Hong Kong Chivas Venture 2017 finals, BYT is a social impact business that is already creating big ripples to change the fashion industry. Recently launched in September this year, BYT is an affordable luxury up-cycled fashion brand which uses sustainable and socially responsible supply chains in Asia. Rather than designing right away, BYT start with the selection process of the fabric, which is the fashion industry’s unused surplus waste materials, as an alternative to using and creating additional materials, to produce gorgeous products. They choose the most beautiful and luxurious fabric to begin with, which is a unique process that truly lends to being resourceful and creative. Why use unused surplus waste materials and socially responsible supply chains … Well it’s a no brainer, they are tired of fashion being a major global polluter; over the sky-high waste rates, and sad that people can sometimes be exploited during the production of clothing.
Collectively, BYT collaborates with the fashion industry to influence positive changes, not only working with outstanding sustainable manufacturers but also with social enterprises and emerging sustainable designers who push the new ethical edge for fashion. The opening BYT ‘Trailblazer Trio’ collection designed by the talented design duo, Victor Chu and Kévin Germanier, features a classic-with-a-twist take on the traditional blazer, biker jacket and trench. My favourite being the cut out back blazer in black which would look great simply paired with a white t-shirt and jeans or, likewise, dressed up with an evening gown. Unlike most brands today BYT’s ethos is that they don’t want you to buy more clothes. Instead, they want you to buy into their belief that fashion must be cared for. Which is why you can either rent, buy or wear and then return your item to BYT and they will repair and recycle it.
We love that this sustainable brand wants to make a difference to a wasteful industry in a city with a throwaway mentality. One of the best part is that they donate 10% of their profits to their sister charity Redress. BYT designs for people like you and me, at the same time as celebrating individuality and authenticity because at the end of the day fashion should be cherished, individual and honoured. Be Yourself Today and act Beyond Your Today with BYT.
